Chick 'n' Sours

Posh FC

Fried chicken, seaweed crack & pickled watermelon

Back in May 2015, I tried the original Chick 'n' Sours at Dalston for the first time and I was very impressive with its sour cocktails, and especially the fried chicken which was something pretty special. The only real issue for me was the location, so as soon as I have discovered that it has opened a second joint in Soho, it was the perfect excuse for me to make a visit. The new site is a lot bigger, and the menu also got bigger with some very exciting new offering, such as the Szechuan aubergine and the "Seven Seal", a pineapple based sour cocktail.

I was a big fan of the new Szechuan aubergine dish, the sweet and chilli element went extremely well with the thick texture of the sweet aubergine. The naked "disco" wings were more or less an upgrade version of the KFC hot wings, it was crispy but doesn't contain the oily and greasy mouth feel your normally would get which was a massive bonus. The guest fry chicken: "General Tso glaze" had a great balance of spicy and sweet flavours from an Asian style dressing, the meat was very moist and the hint of nutty flavour from the sesame plus the coolness of the spring onion work wonderfully with the well executed fried chicken.

It was a very enjoyable meal, the fear when a restaurant expand is the loss of quality and consistency, but the new Chick 'n' Sours do not has such a problem. Both the cocktails and dishes were excellent, and I admire how the chefs use flavours from around the world to turn a humble fried chicken dish into something interesting and exciting without losing its essence. All in all, if you love KFC, but want to try something far superior, then Chick 'n' Sours is well worth a visit.
