Brunch on a Monday night

I really admire the Bone Daddies brand, from its namesake ramen joints, to its Flesh & Bun and Shackfuyu restaurants, each one managed to gain mainstream success and really put Japanese cuisine on the map for Londoners. Shackfuyu was an interesting concept, it offered a range of small and big Asian plates, mostly loaded with rich and bold flavours which I really enjoyed on a few occasions. It has launched a new brunch menu for Monday, with unlimited bubbles or sake for £35. The dishes are taken out from its normal menu so it doesn't feel like it was a downgrade, which can be the case in some restaurants when you opted a set menu over a la carte.

The crispy duck leg bun was just as good, if not better than Bao's. The meat was seasoned finely and the plum soy sauce added such a delightful fruitiness and richness, which was finely balanced off by the cucumber pickle, all inside the soft, milky bun. The main of grilled salmon fillet was a little dry and I felt it was a touch overcooked. However, I did enjoyed the yuzu miso with the sour salty tone which was perfect for a meaty fish. The other main of Iberico pork pluma was executed wonderfully, the meat was tender and the dressing of black pepper miso added a depth of spices and sharpness, without overpowering the meat. Last but not least was the legendary matcha tea ice cream on French toast, two words to describe: Bloody awesome.

With over 5 glasses of sake drunk, I would say the brunch deal was pretty decent value for money, not a bad way to finish off a Monday evening. The cooking are generally pretty solid at Shackfuyu, as is the service level. If you want to go easy with the alcohol, Shackfuyu also offer an express menu for lunch time and pre/post theatre time, £19 for two course and a drink, not bad for a quick but quality restaurant meal. To sum it up, Shackfuyu delivers Asian inspired cooking with a modern approach, while it is hardly authentic, it does deliver good taste and that is the more important factor for me.
