Fischer's Baslow Hall

Sunday lunch delight

Fischer's Baslow Hall
It is not too often I get the chance to escape to the countryside, and when I do, visiting high level local restaurants is always one of my main aim in my city escape plan. Located near in the countryside of Bakewell, Fischer's Baslow Hall is the only Michelin starred restaurant in Peak District. The hotel restaurant has its own garden to grow vegetables and herbs for the kitchen with a beautiful driveway and garden. It is a very charming and elegant site which wouldn't look out of place in a Downtown Abbey scene. The cooking is very British with a modern touch but at a very refine level, using prime local ingredients such as the Derbyshire pork. We booked for a Sunday lunch to finish off our Peak District trip on a high.

Canapes of lamb
Pan fried king prawn and sea bream, oriental salad
Wood pigeon celeriac, watercress & hazelnut salad,
red wine reduction
Rib eye of dry aged beef, potato fondant, red wine sauce

My starter of wood pigeon salad was a flavour harmony, the earthiness of the meat matched well with the peppery and nutty profile of the watercress and hazelnut, it was wonderfully balanced. I got nothing but love for the roast saddle of venison, it was was truly exquisite. It had such a sensational melting texture and great depth of rich, powerful flavours, it worked perfectly with the bitterness of the juniper and the well executed red wine sauce, the creamy mash which was served on the side was also incredibly smooth but not overly rich. The roast rib eye of beef was a delight, every element on the plate was cooked at such a high level, from the vegetables to the potato fondant. This was Sunday roast at its finest.
Roast saddle of venison, red cabbage, juniper
Apricot & hazelnut frangipane apricot sorbet,
poached apricots
White chocolate & lemon tart
caramelised white chocolate & vanilla ice cream
Dark chocolate gateaux, raspberry sorbet

My Sunday lunch at Fischer's was indeed special and a worthy winner of its Michelin star, I would love to return to try its tasting menu as the cooking was exceptional while remain true to its British root, which is something not easy to pull off. Simply put, I have never had such a high quality Sunday lunch in my life, at a cost of £50 for the food plus a glass of wine for such a well accomplish cooking and formal service, it was actually very value for money. On top of that, the place has such a beautiful site and classy dining room to match, Fischer's Baslow Hall is truly worth a visit if you ever visit Peak District.
