Grilled onglet, carrot puree, girolles, parsley |
Piquet, the Anglo French restaurant in Oxford Circus is not a strange name for me, as I have already been to its upstairs bar three times in the past and ate from its bar menu. The simple bar snacks quality is enough to make me put Piquet in my "must-go" list for 2016. Being newly crowned as the 7th best UK restaurant by the trade title "Restaurant Magazine", Piquet is all about modern French cooking using prime seasonal British ingredients. The menu is fairly straight forward with a la carte and all day set menu choices.
Canapes |
Tomato consomme, pea and broad beans |
Pig head croquette, sauce gribiche |
We opted for the summer set menu. My chilled tomato consomme was as clear and as fresh as you can get, the clean and sharp flavour of the tomato was very refreshing and the broad peas added a settled sweetness to the dish. The seared hake was a stunner, the fish was wonderfully moist and finely seasoned, the chicken ballotine worked wonders with the hake and it was a seriously impressive piece of cooking. The grilled onglet was also a hit, cooked perfectly and packed with robust flavours, the classic garnishes of carrot and giorlles added a lovely balance of sweetness and mild earthiness.
Plancha seared hake, chicken ballotine, saffron and garlic |
Raspberry & almond tart, whipped cream |
Fresh mint tea |
My dinner at Piquet was fabulous, the summer set menu, which costed £23 with wine and coffee, sound like almost too good to be true considering how good it was for that kind of price. And if the team from Piquet managed to produce such high quality cooking just from its set menu, without a doubt the a la carte would be even a notch above. Service was also as good as you can get, really charming, friendly while remaining very professional. Piquet was truly impressive and I would highly recommended it for any modern British and French cuisine lovers.
