Kiln

Regional Thai cooking

Langoustines, Kaffir Lime & Sweet Mint

I am not a fan of restaurants that doesn't take booking, but every once a while, I am happy to bite the bullet, given if the restaurant sounds like too good to miss and Kiln fit into that category. From the same people behind the successful Thai restaurant Smoking Goat, Kiln is a tiny Thai restaurant on Brewer Street that does regional Thai food. The menu is short and diners are encouraged to order about 3 dishes each, similar to a tapas bar. The restaurant only offers counter seating behind an open kitchen, so it is not the best place for a large group.

The langoustines was quite something, the sweetness and the freshness was incredible, I really enjoyed the light dressing of the Kaffir lime which offered an intense sour tone, it worked magically with the langoustines' cavier. The grilled Tamworth Pork Loin was excellent, the smokiness was perfect, as was the tender texture, however the portions size is fairly small for the cost. The clay pot baked glass noodles showcased what bold Thai flavours were all about, it was rich and loaded with bags of savoury aroma, accompanied with the brown crab meat offered a hint of earthy tone to a really full flavoured dish.

It took about 30 minutes waiting time and I arrived at 6am, which showed how popular Kiln is. Was it worth the wait? It is a difficult question. Only because Som Saa in East London does some very similar Thai cooking and it does offers booking. On top of that, the cost to dine at Kiln can be fairly high, given how small all the dishes were. However, from a pure cooking point of view, Kiln is the real deal and Soho is lucky to have such an authentic Thai eatery.
